About Us

Our Origins

The Australian Military Wives Choir began with a light-hearted suggestion between friends in an email: ‘Military Wives Choir. Should we start one?’

This suggestion resulted in a small group of singers meeting in a cold Duntroon Chapel a few weeks later in August 2012. From the beginning, the choir felt supported by its community with performance requests coming in before the first rehearsal!

The AMWChoir primarily welcomes women and girls who have a current, significant relationship with an Australian Defence Force (ADF) member or allied defence force member (for example, spouse, girlfriend, daughter, mother), or had a significant connection that may recently have changed, or be a serving, reserve or recently retired female ADF member.

The AMWChoir welcomes individuals who have a connection to the ADF and who sincerely identify as female or are non-binary and sing in the SSA vocal range.

Our Values

The heart of the choir is embodied in its values of

inclusion

flexibility

service

excellence

Social inclusion means the Choir is about what our singers do rather than what our partners may do at work, with a focus on our common threads.

An atmosphere of flexibility allows members to join the choir while balancing other demands on their time.

Volunteer service within the choir is encouraged and appreciated as members desire to help others experience the benefits of singing as a group.

Excellence comes as we work together to improve the Choir as a whole.

Our Symbol

The Gallipoli Rose is the symbol of the choir. The seeds of this rock-rose were gathered by young Diggers in Turkey during World War One and carefully brought home to their mothers to be planted in Australian gardens.

The Gallipoli Rose was chosen for the choir due to its history, its hardy nature and the vibrant pink and white flowers, which give our scarves their signature shade of strawberry pink.

Whenever I sing … I am reminded that I am not alone in my journey as a military wife.
